In this week's Employee Spotlight, we're featuring Angie Mwangi, Director of Health Services at Amira Choice Roseville. If you've had a chance to read Ebenezer's 2025 Impact Report, you may recognize Angie as one of the team members highlighted for her career journey. This spotlight series takes a deeper look at the people behind those stories, showcasing the many growth opportunities available at Ebenezer and celebrating employees who continue to make a difference in the lives of residents and colleagues alike.
Although Angie originally imagined a different career path, caring for her grandmother and an aunt in Kenya planted the seeds for what would become her life's work. After moving to the United States, she found herself surrounded by people working in senior living and decided to give it a try.
"I always wanted to be an accountant," Angie says with a laugh. "I never thought that I was going to be a nurse or a caregiver."
That quickly changed.
"The more that I got into it, I started working in a nursing home... and I loved it. Taking care of residents, getting to connect with them, hearing their stories. Then I went into nursing school, and it just felt right."
Angie joined Ebenezer in 2012 as a Resident Assistant at Trails of Orono when the community first opened. While working full time, she earned her LPN and later her RN, eventually becoming Director of Health Services.
Her career continued to grow through opportunities across the organization, including serving in the Ebenezer Float Pool, supporting multiple communities, and taking on leadership roles before joining Amira Choice Roseville in 2023.
Looking back, Angie says one thing has remained constant throughout her journey.
"I've always felt great support when it was time for me to look at different opportunities," she says. "I've never had anyone discourage growth. My leaders have always encouraged me to go for it."
For Angie, internal career growth doesn't just benefit employees. It also builds confidence with residents and their families.
"When families ask how long I've worked here or how long I've been with Ebenezer, they're always happy to hear I've been here for a long time," she says. "It gives them confidence."
She has also seen the organization evolve in ways that better support both employees and residents, including the addition of the nurse triage team, which improved work-life balance for nurses, and Dimensions Managers, who provide additional support for residents, families, and care teams.
"Those changes have made a real difference for our teams and ultimately for our residents."
After serving in multiple roles and communities, Angie says her leadership style has been shaped by learning how to approach every situation with empathy and understanding.
"I've grown in my clinical skills, but also in how to handle different situations, whether it's challenging residents, families, or employees," she says. "Life can be challenging at times, so it's important to get to know people and meet them where they are."
She credits her experiences across different communities with broadening her perspective and helping her become a stronger leader.
When employees ask Angie about career opportunities at Ebenezer, she's quick to encourage them.
"I always tell people there are opportunities for growth if you want them," she says. "Be engaged. Ask questions. Stay in good standing. Those opportunities will come to you."
She also believes one of Ebenezer's greatest strengths is its culture of encouragement.
"My leaders have always encouraged growth and provided the support and resources I've needed. If anyone is looking to build a career at Ebenezer, I would absolutely support that."
From Resident Assistant to Director of Health Services, Angie's journey is a reminder that careers don't always follow the path we expect. Sometimes the greatest opportunities begin with saying yes to something new and allowing your passion to lead the way.
