Why Give to Ebenezer

Ebenezer Senior Living's mission is to heal, discover, and educate for longer healthier, meaningful lives. As part of Fairview Health Services since 1995, our combined resources and expertise offer access to a full range of choices for seniors.

Ebenezer Senior Living's record of innovation will serve us well as we continue work to provide lifestyle choices and opportunities to improve the health of the communities we serve. From preventative health programs to new technologies that predict health status change, we seek to enhance quality of life, while reducing emergency room visits, hospitalizations and hospital readmissions. We also provide opportunities, including our Life Long Learning and spiritual care programs, which encourage seniors to engage their minds, bodies and spirits.

The Ebenezer Foundation serves as the liaison between Ebenezer Senior Living and our generous family of donors. We raise funds to support Ebenezer Senior Living programs and services. Our strong partnerships with donors allow us to improve and expand our services for residences, update and add new sites, provide vital community resources and invest in cutting edge innovation and state-of-the-art technology.

Residents find joy in programs made possible by generous donor contributions including painting, writing, gardening and woodworking. They discover talents within themselves and memories long forgotten. They find comfort and inspiration in the compassionate service of a chaplain.

About the Ebenezer Foundation

The beginning of Ebenezer Senior Living was Sr Caroline Unhjem, a retired Deaconess from Lutheran Deaconess Hospital and native-born Norwegian. She had for some time been concerned about the homeless in Minneapolis, and in 1915 she began to bring together a group of Norwegian Lutheran pastors and businessmen, who appointed her the first Matron of Ebenezer Senior Living. In May of 1917, 10 men – all poor, all aging, and all Norwegian born, walked through the front door of 3017 Portland Ave to be greeted by Sr Caroline and her help-mates.

She not only cared, though – she also gave financial support. After her second retirement, she went back home to Norway to live out her life, and in 1938, a check from her estate, in the amount of $1,218.33 made its way back to Ebenezer Senior Living. It was the beginning of our endowment to assure continued help for older folks who needed a place to go.

Today Ebenezer Senior Living is the largest senior organization in Minnesota, providing services for over 10,000 seniors.

The purpose of the Foundation, following Sr Caroline’s lead, is to provide financial support to help make life more meaningful and happy for these many seniors.
